With less than two weeks before the "Fight of the Century" in Las Vegas
between unbeaten WBC and WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0)
and WBO welterweight champ Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2) on May 2 at the MGM Grand
Garden Arena, sportsbooks are starting to see a change in the direction money
is headed. The latest updated boxing odds from the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook
on Sunday show Mayweather as a solid -215 favorite (bet $215 to win $100)
against Pacquiao, the +185 underdog (bet $100 to win $185).
Early wagering saw bettors taking the dog Pacquiao, who was as low as
+170 at the SuperBook on March 23. Mayweather opened as a heavier -265 favorite
against Pacquiao (+225) on Feb. 21 at the SuperBook before Pacquiao backers
started moving the line strongly in his favor.
This superfight has been in the works for more than five years since
Pacquiao earned his 50th career victory against Miguel Cotto via 12th-round TKO
in late 2009. That gave "Pac-Man" his 11th straight win, and he would run his
streak to 15 in a row before losing to Timothy Bradley by a highly
controversial split decision to lose the WBO welterweight crown. Pacquiao then
suffered a surprising sixth-round knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez
in his very next fight, which was the fourth and last time they squared off
against each other. He has won his past three bouts though, including a unanimous
decision victory against Bradley one year ago to regain the WBO welterweight
title belt.
"Money" Mayweather had asked for Olympic-style drug testing early on in
negotiations that broke down, and that requirement has finally been met even
though Pacquiao's camp denies it was ever an issue. The last two wins for
Mayweather both came against Marcos Maidana following a much-hyped meeting with
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, all of which ended with him earning decisions, two of
them by majority and one unanimous. As long as Mayweather's fight with Pacquiao
also goes the distance and ends with yet another decision as oddsmakers believe it will, their championship matchup
should have no problem living up to the hype.
