The New York Mets will try to win for the 13th time in 14
games when they visit the New York Yankees in a cross-town interleague MLB matchup
on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. The Mets (14-4) saw their 11-game winning
streak end on Friday with a 6-1 loss to the Yankees (10-8) but bounced back on
Saturday with an 8-2 victory behind starting pitcher Matt Harvey, who improved
to 4-0 in his return season from Tommy John surgery. The Yanks saw their four-game
winning streak end with the loss.
The Mets have won five of their last six games in the Bronx
and ended a three-game skid against the Yankees overall with Saturday's
victory, and they will now turn to SP Jonathon Niese (2-0, 1.50 ERA) in hopes
of taking the series. Niese has allowed only one run in each of his last two
starts, surrendering a solo home run in the seventh inning of a 7-1 win over
the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday after six scoreless innings. He owns a career
mark of 1-1 in four starts against the Bronx Bombers with a 2.05 ERA.
The Yankees will counter with Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 3.12),
who also allowed just one run last time out in a 5-2 victory against the
Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. Eovaldi had given up five runs combined over his first
two starts of the year, and he went winless in two starts against the Mets last
season with a 7.15 ERA. He opened as a -135 favorite (bet $135 to win $100) at
the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.

A couple Yankees could be in for big games on Sunday night,
as designated hitter Alex Rodriguez is 3-for-8 lifetime versus Niese with a
homer and likely wants to redeem himself after going 1-for-7 with two
strikeouts in the first two games of the series. In addition, first baseman
Mark Teixiera is also 3-for-8 during his career against Niese and has five hits
and five RBI in the first two games of this series.
The total went OVER on Saturday for the first time in four
games between the teams after cashing in three of the previous four meetings. The
Mets have seen the OVER go 5-1-1 in their last seven games compared to 12-5-1
for the Yankees overall this year.
