The start of the 2015 baseball season is scheduled to get
underway in less than a couple months now, with some pitchers and catchers reporting
as early as this week, so sportsbooks have already begun posting MLB future
odds on everything from Win Totals for teams to home run player props. The
Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook recently unveiled 2015 MLB Win Totals, and the National
League has the two teams with the highest numbers in the Washington Nationals (94)
and Los Angeles Dodgers (93.5).
The Nationals and Dodgers both underachieved in the playoffs
last season as the the top two seeds in the league and favorites to win the
pennant. Instead, it was the eventual World Series champion San Francisco
Giants and St. Louis Cardinals who upset Washington and Los Angeles, respectively,
en route to a surprising NLCS matchup.
The Giants won three one-run games against the Nationals in the
NLDS to advance and went on to top the Cardinals in five games and the Kansas
City Royals in an epic seven-game World Series featuring two Wild Card teams that
needed to play their win into the postseason. San Francisco has won three World
Series titles in the past five years yet has a modest Win Total of 83.5, although the team lost third baseman Pablo Sandoval to the Boston Red Sox, while St.
Louis has the fourth-highest number at 88.
In the American League, the Royals lost some key players in
the offseason, including free agents James Shields and Billy Butler, and they have
a low number of 79.5 off their first World Series appearance since 1985. Kansas
City swept the Los Angeles Angels and the Baltimore Orioles in the playoffs
last year before falling to the Giants. But the Angels (88.5) and Orioles
(81.5) each have higher Win Totals this year.
Three other teams to watch include the Red Sox (84.5), San Diego Padres (84.5)
and Seattle Mariners (87.5). Boston won the World Series two years ago and reloaded by signing free agents Sandoval and shortstop Handley Ramirez from LA. The Padres inked Shields to a four-year, $75
million deal to bolster their starting rotation and are expected to challenge
the Dodgers in the NL West. The Mariners signed Nelson Cruz (40 home
runs, 108 RBIs in 2014) away from the Orioles and should give the Angels a
battle in the AL West.
